Desert Tarantulas occupy deserts and mesquite woodlands and they are most active during summer months. Males can be found wandering at night is search of females, which typically stay in their vertical, silk-lined burrows. The abdomen of both the male and female Tarantula is covered with urticating (stinging) hairs to deter predators. The hairs that are brushed off the body with their legs will cause and itchy rash on human skin. In most cases, the female has a more stocky body and is larger than the male. The male is thinner with black hair covering most of his body.
