Honey Bees occupy a variety of habitats with flowers. Honey Bees pollinate an estimated one third of all the food crops we consume. Honey Bees are often raised commercially as pollinators and for honey, pollen, wax and other products. Honey Bees are social insects that live in bee colonies that can have up to 80,000 workers, led by one single queen. Wild colonies build hives in hollow trees and other sheltered spaces. Colonies live for several years. Worker Honey Bees are all female and are the only bees most people ever see, workers forage for food and build and protect the hive. Male bees are called drones, several hundred drones live in each hive during the spring and summer, but are expelled for the summer. The queen and worker spend the winter months in the hives living on stored honey and pollen.
